Nonement IV
“Mr. Shadbolt was inspired to produce a digital work of art inspired by Barnett Newman’s Onement 1, naming his own original art Nonement IV. He states that he created this art piece by “translating many of the techniques of masking, and then roughly painting over strips of masking tape to create a new electronic version…” “using brushes and washes inspired by Newman’s original approach”. Unfortunately Mr. Shadbolt offers no details regarding how he “created a purely digital expression of this painting concept” (Shadbolt).
Mr. Shadbolt did create an original artwork that is clearly inspired by the work of Barnett Newman. Unfortunately, his statement that he ‘translated’ techniques of Newman’s approach, provides no explanation of his method of translation, nor how the creation of this image involved the techniques of Barnett Newman that were explored in this course. His essay describes his artwork, but doesn’t describe the “material and technical terms and make specific reference to processes demonstrated in the course” (from exam-scoring rubric).
He offered no details regarding how he “created a purely digital expression of this painting concept” (Shadbolt) or of how these techniques are similar to or related to the techniques and processes taught in this course, other than to mention the use of an electronic version of “brushes and washes”, also without description of process. Additionally, he didn’t speak to the challenges that he faced and what he learned or discovered in the process of producing this art.”
