Self-Isolation: Week Twenty Four
A fairly mixed bag of work this week as I move away from some of the recent design work I’ve been doing exclusively on the computer, into three dimensional, painted and other media. The Munnies were a ton of fun to work on. These 4” Munnies have lived on my studio’s window sill for years, after I got them on a trip to the Kid Robot store in San Francisco in 2010 (I think). Attempting to use a similar spray paint palette to what I’ve been using in my recent design work, but for real objects. Shopping for art materials again has been fun!
I’ve also returned to the classroom, passing an 8-week course on Postwar Abstract Expressionism held through The Museum of Modern Art in New York. Inspired by the course, I painted a number of small canvas pieces. I’m currently also engaged in a 5-week Psychology of Memory & Movies course from Weslyan University, and a 10-week Greek & Roman Mythology course from The University of Pennsylvania. They come with a bunch of reading, so I’ve mainly been spending my evenings with those at the moment.
Also continuing to work through my enormous Star Wars nanography piece (I have 5 of the 9 done at the moment as they take forever to make), and gave a fun talk at work about what it takes to be a successful Product Manager. Making the deck took me back to my New York Times days where I’d do things like that a lot more frequently. I’ve also been cleaning up some of my archival work and discovering some old talks from the real estate years, so working on getting those up on the site as well this weekend.
Been watching a ton of arthouse and foreign movies along the way, and reading The Odyssey. The studio soundtrack has been a mixture of Nick Cave, Badly Drawn Boy, Sigur Ros and Misty Dixon. Have also dipped into the beginnings of Horizon Zero Dawn, which feels good so far but I’m going pretty slow there.
