QVC: Interactive Television Hub

Research & Development Demos, 1999-2001

During my time at QVCUK, and in parallel to building out QVCUK.com, I worked on a large number of prototypes and demos for potential interactive television channels and services, leveraging the emergent technology enabled by the UK’s satellite and cable television expansion. Most of this work has sat on dusty CD-ROMs in the corner of the studio for the past twenty years, but I’ve finally collated it all and given it a home online.

These projects were so much fun to work on, particularly the cross-channel interactive service we internally called ‘Browser Central’. Most of the demos were eventually prototyped with the Apple Media Tool, which enabled our stakeholders to interact with the demos as if they were using an end user’s television remote. The full-scale weather service, complete with a bespoke designed symbol set, was a particular highlight for me.

“Matt's part in the development of QVC in the digital media age cannot be overstated. He was a leading force in the development of the company's activities on the web and brought a studied and educated eye to the design of QVC's groundbreaking interactive TV services. This work, with the cross branding work between web and TV channel, set the standard for the future and was a huge contribution.”
