One Pound Chips
I lived on food from these 2 places when I was a student at Kingston University. I’d go to Kwun Sing right around closing time for them, and Choy would give me a bag of chips for 50p, and often whatever else they had left at the end of the night. I’d go see him maybe 2-3 times a week, and the food, especially the fish and chips, was always amazing. I moved away and lived in Holland for 2 years, but when I moved back to London, I lived in a tiny apartment next door to where I’d lived as a student. The first night I was back, I went to Kwun Sing and Choy said “where have you been?”
Surbiton kebab shop was a bit of a longer walk for most of us than Kwun Sing, but often where we’d end up after the student bar. This place was notorious for fights and general student aggravation from the locals. Yasmina, one of the Eastern European women that worked there, lived in the same house as me, and would often give me extra chips or a particularly heavy slice off the elephant leg. I usually went for a chicken doner kebab, which I ended up throwing up a few minutes later several times on the walk home. I’ve some great memories of this place.
